Jodha Akbar was a way better film than Padmavat and Bajirao etc. SLB best films were the ones that were not as commercially successful as his weaker offerings. Gorwarikar's main problem is the running time and Arjun Kapoor. The former wasn't an issue in a film like Lagaan because the plot was tight. His need to make a 2 hour story into a 4 hour one hurts his films. I am surprised at times that this guy is the same one who wrote Lagaan. level 2 Exactly he is on par and at times better than SLB the scene of Hritik with the song hamesha hamesha salamat rhe was so great and grand it fit perfectly the songs in SLB films sometimes feel like they don't belong to that period or are outright filmy. level 1 All the 'shit' stars aligned with Arjun Kapoor who can't act for his life, SLB who is still stuck in early 2000s and a genre which has been beaten to death. Based on the 3rd battle of Panipat fought in January 1761, the film has a running length of 180 minutes, a tad too long to endure, but perhaps important to underscore the bravery, intelligence and valour of the Marathas. I am unable to validate the historical accuracy of the story, but the director seems to have researched the subject well constant rant about the unification and solidarity of Hindustan and how foreign invaders must be throttled is finally met with a great betrayal, which also is thematically associated with the title. The film is technically superlative with admirable action, excellent costume design and a great background score. However, Ajay Atul's melodies for the songs aren't as impressive as their previous offerings, and more importantly, there isn't enough space for songs in the film which makes their presence quite irritating. The production values and the movie's mounting are larger than life and therefore the battle drama is pulsating with excitement. On the acting front, there's nothing to boast about - Arjun Kapoor is his usual self appearing uninterested or melancholy at times, Kriti Sanon delivers her role with trademark energy, but it's Sanjay Dutt who adds some gravitas in the character of Ahmad Shah Abdali, in a relatively smaller role. Sanjay Dutt is top notch. He steals the show.
Arjun Kapoor is ordinary. The movie would have fared a lot better with a Ranvir Singh for example. Arjun lacks presence but to say that he is calamitous takes it too far.
Kriti Sanon has some good moments and holds her role very well. The movie is slow in the beginning but gets better in the second half. Not a classic but a decent watch.
